Domain Discussion...
Who's winning the Web? With erectile dysfunction, or male impotence as it used to be known, out of the closet since the debut of blockbuster Pfizer drug Viagra (sildenafil citrate) in 1998, we wanted to examine who is, and who is not, visible in this much-discussed health category.
Needless to say -- but we'll say it anyway -- this multi-billion dollar category is dominated in terms of web exposure by some very small shops. We did find the major manufacturers of the big ED drugs, but not in the tippy-top spots. Only Levitra-maker Bayer, based in Germany, placed a domain in the Top Ten Domains, #5), with its www.ed.bayer-pharmaceuticals.com.
Next up, Pfizer, New York-based, placed at #30 for its drug-specific site, viagra.com. Indianapolis-based Lilly ICOS entrant Cialis, marketed as "the weekend pill" because the amount of time its effect lingers in the body, didn't show up in an official manufacturer-sponsored site, but plenty of web kiosks are retailing the popular Viagra competitor. Like Pfizer, Lilly offers information about Cialis at both its corporate home page, and a product-specific website.
A high percentage of top sites were simply what we would call 'cyber-mall-kiosks,' - sites with an array of names, but one purpose -- to retail Viagra and other psychotropic drugs to you as cheaply and quickly as possible. Moreover, because there are no rules regarding who can purchase a 'dot-org' (the designation for a non-profit organization) suffix, many of these kiosks are, in fact, operating under dot-org domains!
Two examples of these are gothicgranola.org and maclaweb.org (#3, #7, respectively). Both retail viagra, and both want you to buy other drugs.
And, there are a small number of highly-exposed independent voices offering male health information about ED: erectile-dysfunction-impotence.org (#9), is apparently a doctor-sponsored educational organization and referral service based in a Minneapolis suburb -- the Erectile Dysfunction Institute (EDi).
Other highly-exposed sites with apparent claims to informing the public include nestproject.org (#13), medicinenet.com (#20) and doctoradvice.org (#29).
Of the big portal and retailing giants, Yahoo and Amazon made appearances in the Top Thirty Domains, with Amazon.com (#2) clearly coming out a winner, but still far below slightly puzzling Number One site, first-med.co.uk, with a much higher score than Amazon and anything else.
Yahoo's Health 'channel,' health.yahoo.com, at #26, was way below rampaging retailer Amazon's top-level domain, but still way above many other sites; the next time we find portal-type entrants in the list is dir.yahoo.com (#22) and LookSmart's findarticles.com (#41).
Not showing in any great number, or with high scores, were the major dot-com bubble-era medical sites, like DrKoop.com or WebMD.com.
Search continues to evolve, but our ED report shows that linear results continue to present real challenges for the dissemination of accurate and original information from drug-makers, about their products and their promises.
