THE WEB'S 'ANACONDA' GOBBLES UP THE COMPETITION FOR HEALTHY EATING SPACE

Who's winning the web? The race for keyword exposure in the healthy eating
space is sizzling with some big names and some not-so-big names. Online
retail Woolly Mammoth Amazon.com dominates the list; it's stock of thousands
of books in the dieting, cooking, and wellness categories seems to be giving the Seattle company
a leg up on our index.

In the raw URL list, "Wheat Free, Sugar Free Gourmet Cooking," a 2001 book by Sue O'Brien, made the top ten, another Amazon book offering!

Less expected was the high ranking of diet-i.com, an aggregation site
that rates in some detail various kinds of diets. Though not hugely
interactive, the site is a quick compendium of info and links about the
latest and not-so-greatest diets (remember the Scarsdale Diet?). Anne
Collins
(#3) pushes her own diet and has done quite well in her native Britain, along the U.S. Not as well known
as Jenny Craig or Weightwatchers, Collins appears aggressive in the site
optimization department and her ranking here proves that.

Recipelink.com's (#5) ranking was also surprising, as we hadn't heard of this
site -- and we like to cook! The site is privately-held, connected to kitchenlink.com,
and based in Rochester, NY; we'd add that the paucity of corporate and contact info on the site
is unfortunate. iVillage.com (#10) makes a showing; the once-beleagured woman's site is making a
slow but steady comeback from near-oblivion to recapture the growing
women-only media market (anyone heard from Oxygen lately?).

Shopping.com and fatfree.com both appear farther down the list, along with
many other information purveyors. We didn't find any of the newspaper health
sections, and a surprising paucity of healthy-eating magazines, like
cookinglight.com, or Vegetarian, didn't make the index.

Ongoing recipe and lifestyle support is important for any healthy eating
regimen, and here we found very few of the usual health suspects
represented: WebMD, DrKoop and others. What a difference a few years makes!

Then again, fad diets like the Caveman and the Paleolithic diet are also not
well-represented with their own sites.
