Discussion...

Who's selling vast tracts of land on the Web? We're not sure, but we know who's got the most exposure to this fascinating and high-product-value niche. Land on the web ranges from un-buildable mountainside lots in Los Angeles to Mississippi cotton plantations to hunting and fishing land in the Appalachian Mountains. We took a look at rural property, which is a fairly broad topic-space; it includes horse farms, and orchards, and forest tracts suitable for logging activity.

Who's the winner of this club? Well, you might think it's the sites in the top, say, three to five positions...but read on.

When we look at the Top Five of the Top Ten, we see that the directories and aggregators share the space with listings sites: Eaglestar.net, based in Las Vegas, is really a directory, while Agriseek (#4) covers the entire universe of agricultural needs, from livestock, to land, to equipment. Meanwhile, some companies that sell nationally or nearly nationally, also made the Top Ten -- United Country Real Estate, for instance (#6).

LandAndFarm.com, carrying For-Sale-By-Owner listings, as well as brokers, carries global property listings and is based in Massachusetts. But, though it's not a directory, LF vies with Eaglestar.net for the top spot, and both sites put in a number of appearances in the Top Twenty URLs list, showing that occurences and average positions both play important roles in the ultimate rankings.

Northwest-national.com and GoCountry.net (#3,7) both distinguish themselves as regional players with strong web offerings, hence their visibility in the Top Ten -- maybe because they are corporately connected! These sites focus on the Dakotas, Upper Plains and upper Rocky Mountain states, such as Idaho and Montana and Wyoming.

We were surprised to find Land.net down in the 100s on the Domain List, while commercial real estate site, Loopnet, didn't even place -- at least not where rural property is concerned. But that's what makes horse races -- and horse farms, apparently.
